Case Studies

Payroll Taxes and the IRS

A local painting company was working with another payroll company in town. They began receiving notices from the IRS regarding delinquent tax filings, stating that penalties and interest were owed. These tax monies are supposed to be managed by your payroll company, included in the fees that you pay them and subsequently paid by them to the IRS. This payroll company was not making these payments on behalf of their client. The painting company was referred to us by one of our current clients, and we were able to straighten everything out. We saved the painting company from paying any fines, and they have been our client now for two years.

Sexual Harassment

A client in the blue collar industry was being accused of sexual harassment. This is a very scary thing for a company to go through, and at Moresource, we understand this. Our HR department is very thorough. We do a full investigation, including interviews with all witnesses, which may include staff and vendors. We can suggest a new policy to prevent future claims, and provide sexual harassment training to the entire company. This company’s incident was resolved positively thanks to our help.

Wage and Hour

One of our clients, in the food service industry, was facing a Wage and Hour concern. Several employees in their organization were classified as exempt (i.e. salaried, did not receive overtime pay). The Department of Labor believed that this company had not met the requirements which allow these individuals to be exempt, and therefore wanted to charge the company with fines and penalties, as well as back wages to be paid to the employees. Moresource did a full investigation, met with the Missouri Department of Labor Wage and Hour people, and submitted reports in writing. We were also able to provide accurate and detailed accounts of the company’s payroll, which the Wage and Hour people required. It was discovered that the assistant managers at this client’s business were misclassified. We were able to help them rectify the situation and avoid all fines, penalties and back wages.

Immigration and Naturalization

Immigration and naturalization is a major issue in business, and we often find that clients are confused about the laws. I-9 documents are required by law to be completed by the employer and employee within 3 days of employment and kept on file. Often times clients will make copies of a driver’s license and social security card and attach these copies to the I-9 forms. This is not necessary. The law states the employer must view the documentation ONLY. Also, many employers do not realize that they cannot, legally, require an employee to bring particular documents in when hired, but must share all options of acceptable documentation as noted on the I-9 form, leaving it up to the employee to decide which documents they choose to provide. A completed I-9 form is what is legally necessary. Fines for inaccurate paperwork can be as high as $2000 per line not completed accurately.

Company Training

We get many requests from businesses that are not clients but who want us to provide various training for their organizations. For instance, the Missouri PTA requested a True Colors seminar for their organization, and it was a huge success. We do lots of training on various subjects, including True Colors (team building, communication, teaching and learning), customer service, leadership, sexual harassment ad other HR issues.
